The four sections, their weightings, and every term actually set

The format β€” and it CHANGES between years

The 2019 and the 2020–21 papers are not the same shape. The section names and their weightings both moved, so prepare for the union of the two rather than for either one. What did not change is that the multiple-choice section uses five options, A–E.

Section I — Explain the terms

Worth 24–30% of the paper

Short definitions, usually 2–3 marks each. This is the most predictable part of the paper β€” every term below has actually been set, and three of them appeared in both years. Work from the Definitions Bank.

Section II — Outline briefly / describe

Worth 20–40% of the paper

Structured prose answers. Pathways dominate β€” use the Pathway Sheets, and note that every unit Q-Bank ends with marking-guided model essays written to the shape the department rewards.

Section III — Elucidate / explain why

Worth 16% of the paper

Reasoning questions rather than recall β€” why a mechanism works, not merely what it is. The β€œIntuition” boxes in each unit are written for exactly this section.

Section IV — Multiple choice

Worth 30–40% of the paper

FIVE options, A–E β€” not four. Every Q-Bank on this site uses five options for that reason, and the correct answer is cycled across all five positions so that position never becomes a clue.

Every term actually set in Section I

These are not predictions. Each one was read off the 2019 or the 2020–21 paper, and the amber badges mark the terms that appeared in both years — if you learn nothing else, learn those.

What the pattern tells you

5 of the 15 distinct terms come from Module E, molecular biology — the largest share of any module, and it comes from the four units students reach last, with the least time left. Module A, proteins and enzymes, contributes 4, and every remaining module two apiece. Plan revision by where the marks actually are, not by where the course begins.

How the answers on this site were checked

A note on the “marking schemes”

Four answer documents circulate with this course. They are other students' completed answer sheets, not official marking schemes. Where three of them converge on the same wording, that is good evidence of the phrasing the department expects — and where a Q-Bank definition carries an expected-phrasing note, that is where it came from.

They are not treated as the authority on the biochemistry itself. Every statement published on this site was checked against Harper's Illustrated Biochemistry first, and where a lecture slide and Harper's disagree, the unit says so explicitly rather than quietly choosing one.
