The WHO definition of health ★★★

Quiz 2 asks this directly, and it offers four wrong definitions before the right one. The wrong answers are instructive, because each is a partial definition that sounds entirely reasonable.

Look at how the four distractors line up: physical, absence-of-disease, mental, social. The correct answer contains all three positive dimensions plus an explicit denial of the absence-of-disease view — “and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

That closing clause is the whole point, and it is the part students drop. Health is defined positively, as something you can have more or less of, rather than as a default state you fall out of when ill.

This matters for everything else in the subject. If health is only the absence of disease, then medicine is repair. If health is complete physical, mental and social well-being, then chronic disease management, self-management, qi-gong and 'sub-health' in §4 all have somewhere to sit. Quote the definition in full — the last clause carries the argument.

Biomedical versus biopsychosocial ★★★

Quiz 2 asks: which issue does the biopsychosocial model accommodate that the biomedical model does not? The answer is “that a particular biochemical alteration does not always translate directly into an illness.”

Why the wrong options are all true

This question is unusually well built, and worth studying as a question rather than just answering.

Every distractor is a correct statement: pathogens do cause illness, antibiotics do treat tuberculosis, aseptic technique does reduce complications. They are not wrong — they are simply things the biomedical model already handles perfectly well.

The question is not asking what is true. It is asking what the older model cannot account for. And the answer is the observation every clinician makes: two patients with identical biochemistry, one ill and one not. Explaining that gap needs psychology and social circumstance — which is the entire justification for the biopsychosocial model.

It also connects straight back to Unit 4's determinants of health. If income, housing and social support shape outcome, then a purely biological model is incomplete by construction.

The language of disease ★★★

Quiz 2's matching section pairs five terms with five definitions. These are the vocabulary of pathology and they recur throughout the rest of your degree, so they are worth learning properly rather than matching by elimination.

Aetiology and pathogenesis are two halves of one question

These two are the pair most often confused, and the distinction is simple once stated.

Aetiology asks why — what caused this? Pathogenesis asks how — by what mechanism did that cause produce this disease?

Take tuberculosis. The aetiology is Mycobacterium tuberculosis, plus crowding and malnutrition. The pathogenesis is the organism surviving inside macrophages, the Th1 response, the granuloma, and eventually caseation — which is exactly the type IV hypersensitivity you met in Immunology.

And note the word subjective in the definition of symptom. A symptom is what the patient reports — pain, nausea, fatigue. What the doctor observes is a sign. The quiz's chosen wording makes that distinction the answer.

Sub-health ★★

Sub-health

A transitional state from health to disease.

Quiz 2 also asks, as a true/false statement, whether “there are many causes leading to sub-health conditions including poor lifestyle habits, extreme personalities, pollutions and stresses from work and life.” Those four causes — poor lifestyle habits, extreme personalities, pollution, and stress from work and life — are the list to know.

Sub-health only exists if health is defined positively

The concept is worth a moment because it depends entirely on §1.

Under a strict biomedical view there is no such state: you either have a diagnosable disease or you do not, and 'sub-health' is not a category. But under the WHO definition — complete physical, mental and social well-being — there is obviously a large territory between complete well-being and diagnosable disease. Sub-health is the name for that territory.

Look at the four stated causes and notice that they are the same territory Unit 4 mapped: lifestyle, personality, environment, stress. This is the SNAPE list and the determinants of health arriving from a different direction — and it is also where traditional Chinese medicine claims to be most useful, treating imbalance before it becomes illness.

Three parts of this course converge on the same idea: the person who is not yet ill is still worth treating. Sun Simiao's principle in Unit 8 — prevent an illness before it occurs — is exactly this.

Read the instruction, not just the question

Two of these sections tell you explicitly how much to write, and both instructions are easy to ignore under time pressure.

Enumeration says “no explanation is needed here — just enumerate.” Writing paragraphs there wastes minutes you need for the essays and earns nothing extra.

Multiple choice says “encircle the letter corresponding to the one best answer.” One answer, even when several options look defensible — and with all of the above present, 'one best answer' may well be the catch-all.

Both essay questions shown come straight from the HGP review sheet in Unit 6, with model answers already supplied. That is the single highest-value revision in this strand.

This is goal 6 of the HGP — ELSI, from Unit 6 §3. The project explicitly set out to address the ethical, legal and social issues that may arise from the project. Concrete examples from the same source: companies such as Myriad Genetics offering genetic tests showing predisposition to illnesses including breast cancer — raising questions of privacy, insurance, employment discrimination, and what it means to know a risk you cannot act on.

In brief: the next step was identifying the genetic variants that increase risk for common diseases such as cancer and diabetes, accomplished using the “shortcut” — looking only at sites where many people carry a variant, on the assumption that common diseases would have common causes — using European, East Asian and African genomes, with the genome broken into ~150,000 base-pair pieces cloned into BACs and shotgun-sequenced.
